A White Minority

In a recent analysis (reported on CNN) by the US Census Bureau; Texas has joined California, New Mexico and Hawaii as states with "majority-minorty" populations, meaning there are more minorities than caucasians in the state.

(Why is it called a "Majority-Minority, beats me! -- if the minority mecomes the majority well then wouldn't the minority be referred to now as the majority?  anyway...)

This is a growing trend among many other states, and obviously becoming an Electoral issue.

"Five other states -- Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia, New York and Arizona -- aren't far behind, with about 40 percent minorities."

A very interesting quote:

"The nation should be more than half minorities by 2050, said Steve Murdock, a demographer at the University of Texas at San Antonio."

"If you look in the 1990s, in every one of the 50 states, non-Anglo Latino populations grew faster than Anglo populations," Murdock said. "It's a very pervasive pattern."

TV Ratings don't stand alone

With a recent post about TV ratings for the major news stations, one must look at other factors.

Here is a rating list for news websites (alexa.com):

#13:  BBC Online
#14:  CNN.com
#46:  NYTimes.com

Fox News DOESN'T even make the top 100!

As noted in various places, Democrats read more of their news online and in newspapers.  As, CNN tv viewers may be going down...you can bet their online version is moving up.

Secret imprisonment...

From NPR:

The Bush administration is seeking to justify the imprisonment of an American citizen using secret evidence. The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to throw out the case based on evidence that is being withheld from the man's lawyers.

You can listen to the story here:

This should be bigger news.  Sadly, I feel we are becoming something we always thought we could avoid.

Lott adds to the total royal bill

As the official gift from the American people to W. at the inaguration is announced. How about spend that $ and the other $40 million for the inaguration on some armor for a hummer or some medicine for AIDS stricken Africa, tsunami victims...or hit Lott at home for the 19.9% (highest in the nation) of the state of Mississippi living in poverty, how about some help for them?

"Senator Trent Lott and the members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) will present to the President and Vice President the American people's official gift in honor of their Inauguration. The gifts, a set of priceless, one-of-a-kind cut crystal hurricane lamps, were commissioned by the JCCIC and will be presented on behalf of the nation to the President and Vice President at the Inaugural Luncheon following the swearing in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol."
